You could even have them attempt to work off the perceived debts or payments of their friends or family! If your character chooses to try to work off another character’s debt for them, this results in what's certainly an astonishing lack of actual decrease. Separate people, separate debts. Weirdly, this isn’t mentioned before the contract is signed.
The character I'm considering apping wants to gain something for another person from his world — specifically, he wants the witch to grant him the money/resources to send his daughter to college. Since this isn't an existing debt on the part of his daughter (she's not of age to apply for colleges yet, nor has she asked anyone else for help with the future cost), does it count as his own debt or hers?
