In the case of a character whose name is their identity, like a country from Hetalia, how would that work?

I sort of assume they'd attempt to introduce themselves as the country of ____, and then forgetting that name would have to rename the entire country in their head as well? how does that work for recognizing citizens of their nation and the like?
