To keep track of your posts and threads in [community profile] forestcovered and [community profile] deadtrees, we use the standard character name (canon) tag system. All tags are added into the comms by moderators, who will do their best to ensure tags are made in an orderly fashion.

Upon acceptance into the game, please reply to this post with your character name and canon ([au] character name (canon), if you take up the AU slot rather than the canon) to have your tags created.

DEBTS & DEBT QUESTS

Here on Koriko, everything revolves around commerce, including your stay! After all, you're in debt. But you don't really want to stay in debt, do you? Fear not, because it's actually possible for your character to succeed in getting out of debt! Just like real life- Oh wait...

'Debt' is not simply monetary here; in fact, if you try to pay the Witch in gold or some other typical currency, she'll thank you for the donation and then laugh. Your real payment comes from your work - and your work isn't limited to just your day-to-day life. The Witch realised what makes a place somewhere that people want to come back to is a feeling of 'home' and 'happiness' - a sense of community. The work a debtor does is about affecting people's lives, whether it's the customers or your coworkers'.

Of course, 'home' and 'happiness' can mean extremely different and sometimes dark things depending on the person, but details aren't something she gets caught up on. Haha.

In order to really lower your debt, there will be small 'quests' available for debtors to take up. These won't be announced ICly - usually - but rather OOCly, during announcement posts.

Most tasks would be able to be completed by multiple characters in some fashion, making them ideal for building CR, but only the character who chose to undertake it will be rewarded with a debt decrease. However, all others will receive rewards as well, as an incentive for improved services in the future, so don't let that stop you!

Below is an example of how a typical monthly quest set-up could look:

Tier One [3 Points]

- Help another character clean five or more baths

- Volunteer at an understaffed restaurant with rude customers

Tier Two [6 Points]

- Find a way to stop a feud between two rival kitsune

- Train a hopeless employee in a new job

Tier Three [15 Points]

- Do whatever it takes to trigger a fellow employee's name

- A customer desires you to poison an employee who wronged her: Tell the employee or poison them?

Tier Four [30 Points]

- Deliver meals on time to the residential district in the deep forest

WARNING: It will be impossible for your character to escape injury

More details would be given upon request for those who choose to do the task. Tasks can be failed and we encourage players to do what feels like the most fun and IC! Don't sweat it if your character fails; in fact, something good or interesting could be triggered from it. Please explore your options and take risks! More fun will be had the more players and their characters wiggle around the debt tasks.

Regarding the points themselves, however - they're just for fun. We encourage players to set their characters' debt point total themselves, and reasonably balance the numbers if they wish. If your character does succeed in getting out of debt, but you wish for them to remain in game, they could sign a new contract to help out castmates or friends or for further rewards or any other method that you think would suit your character.

If you don't want to religiously track your debt, that's fine! Again, we do not want this to be a stressor, but rather a fun mechanic. However, if you wish to keep track or just enjoy having hard numbers, please see this handy stats and permissions post we made for a possible template!

STATS & PERMISSIONS

A template for a stats and permissions post, made to include information exclusive to this game for management purposes.

Players are in no way required to use the one provided here -- we'd encourage it, to help keep track of one's occupations et al, but it's not absolutely necessary. If you choose to, however, its coding is very basic for ease of changing the appearance:

PLOT SUGGESTIONS

Because plots only coming from us wouldn't be as fun.

Quite simply, this is where you can make a plot suggestion. Your idea can be as vague - "What if really hungry kitsune though??" - or detailed as you like. Because Koriko is a city for spirits all over the world, as opposed just East Asia, even the sky's not the limit. There are rabbits on the moon, you know.

Alternatively, you can also request to run your own player plot here. Just give us an outline of your plan and we'll let you know if it's good to go, or when it would be, if it doesn't seem doable at the moment. Don't worry, though, we're flexible.

For mod plot suggestions, just go ahead and leave a comment. For player plots, please fill out the following form:

REQUESTS

Upon arrival, the Witch took everything your character had, name included, and stored it away. That sucks. But you can get it back.

Possessions, like your character's clothing or phone, can be gotten back simply through hard work and currying favour. That's right, you have to do a little ass-kissing. Go the extra mile in your work and make sure everyone knows and you're bound to get noticed. Then, just mention when the Witch is around that you'd really love to have your [insert item here] back and it will appear in your character's futon the next day. Only one item can be gained back at a time, so choose carefully.

For remembering a character's real name, it's a little trickier. To recall their name, a debtor must have been in play for at least one month. Second, something must trigger the memory of their name. They can't simply have an epiphany, and this doesn't immediately clear them of their debt. But once they have it back, it's best not to share that information outside of close friends, and definitely don't tell the Witch. Names are power. Save it.

If you don't? Well, don't worry about it.

Or maybe you'd like to confront her directly? This post may also be used to schedule a meeting with the Witch herself. This can be done by any character, but naturally she'll be more willing to take time out of her workday to meet with workers established for a month or more. This could be done in any variety of ways, from going through a stack of paperwork or sending her a letter (proper!), to just storming in her office at the right time (...). And, of course, depending on her mood and workload, she might just curse you for bothering her...

Er. Well, take a look at these forms instead.

To request an item or name, fill out the below form:

Exploration-based requests work a little differently:

And finally, to request a meeting with the Witch:

Don't worry; you don't need to ask us for everything. Little things can easily be handwaved - but who knows what fun you might get out of a request?

Deaths

DEATHS

The fresh corpses of debtors, if poorly hidden, are found within a 24 hour period by minor spirits under the witch's command. Because their working capability has been so sharply disrupted by the fact that they've died, they are occasionally - occasionally - used as feed for any patrons who might like human flesh, gotta make up for that somehow and their revival costs are tacked on to their debts. The more you die, the longer you have to stay.

However, the witch does understand that death is a traumatic experience. In order to make your return to life a smooth one, she'll be removing your emotions and/or any unnecessary senses for a time.

Well. That's assuming she can be bothered to revive you at all. On that note, if you kill someone? Don't get caught.

Deaths are reported by players on this post - the particulars of what happens after are up to your OOC discretion, but you could have a mod choose for you, if you want! We'll be nice.

Housing

Letting employees live in the upper levels of the bathhouse is actually quite new. Your seniors have been forced to stay in even less spacious areas dotted around behind the bathhouse. Although the Witch could magically expand the area, she chose instead to simply build a new area to expand upon instead. Located in the very back of the bathhouse, the employee’s quarters are a series of large, vertically-aligned “rooms,” akin to flats. Each floor is fitted with metal plates where their names are inscribed, but there doesn't seem to be any apparent connection between them. Individual rooms by default contain six futons each, and are not separated by sex or species. Along the walls are a closet for storing your futons during the day, and small storage containers for your belongings. There are enough for you to use more than one, but they don’t come with locks naturally.

Each room is fitted with two bathtubs and a showering space, as well as a pair of toilets. Employee quarters all have a generous balcony that overlooks the city behind and to the sides of the bathhouse, along with the ocean. In the center, surrounded by the quarters, is an employee lounge. It is sparsely decorated, although the Witch doesn't care what the employees do to it, and contains a large, old-fashioned radio that broadcasts different audio dramas of all genres, as well as music from different time periods and cultures. A cabinet of various board games, dice and cards have also been very, very generously (in The Witch's opinion) supplied for downtime.

An example of the layout of a single floor may be found here. Rooms are assigned by The Witch automatically and randomly, but if you would like to make changes to your room assignments or move out of the quarters after getting sufficient funds to do so, please comment to this page. Their specific occupation may be willing to house them if they ask, or they can just go sleep on a roof. It really doesn't matter where.

Simply comment with your character and their canon! Preferences may be said if a character would move to be with someone else or ask to switch futons.

Premise

PREMISE

Existing on another plane of reality are many hundreds of cities catering to the unseen world of spirits. These cities are vast and strange, in many ways familiar, but inhabited mostly by creatures from folklore and myth. Most of them do not actually live in the cities for long, instead passing through them on their way to new places in the human world to call home, or just visiting for a vacation. In fact, the cities are quickly evolving into massive tourist spots, and spirits are just eating it up! Sometimes literally.

Of course, the problem with rapid expansion is the need for more labour. Lesser spirits are numerous, but projecting the image of an exotic getaway calls for something new. That's where you come in.

You aren't the first and you won't be the last taken from outside the spirit realm and put to work here, in the growing city of Koriko. Don't worry, though; the witch that runs the island picked you because you have a debt to pay. Just by working here, she'll absolve your debt and grant you a little favour in return. Just sign your name away and you'll be put to work serving the vacationing spirits.

Oh, you want to know how long it will take to pay off your debt? Well, that's up to you isn't it? You read the fine print...

Didn't you?

CANON UPDATES

The Witch, despite her underhanded ways, is still very business-minded. When it comes to her employees, she wants them in the best shape possible - if she believes a leave of absence back to their home world will help them become a more efficient employee, then so be it. She'll simply send them home with a snap of her fingers, and ideally, they'll return a more experienced worker.

Of course, since she owns their name, she can summon them back at any moment, too. Such is our canon update system.

The minimum length for leave is three days in-game; it can, however, be longer if you choose to use it for a hiatus, or just if you want. Characters will not recall their time in Koriko upon returning home.

Drops

DROPS

We're sad to see you go, but we know things happen. Or don't, as the case might be. Either way, let us know here and we'll remove your character from our lists.

Unlike hiatuses, the circumstances for drops are much stricter: Your character has either paid off their debt (regardless of whether or not they were close previously, don't worry about having to choose the second option), or been eaten. But if you change your mind, don't stress over bringing them back later. That's how magic works, after all.

HIATUSES

Life getting busy? We understand. Just drop us a line here, and the witch will see your characters' needs well taken care of. Any justification for your characters' status during your hiatus goes, but as of this writing, we're offering two ideas:

Option A:

Either willingly or through the witch's doing, your character has been placed in solitary confinement for the duration of your hiatus, for the purposes of intensive training in their chosen fields.

Option B:

Auto-Pilot. They're actually there the entire time, even though you're not playing them.
